- Black Pepper
- Name: Piper nigrum
Origin: India
The peppercorns are dried and crushed then steam distilled. This stimulating and warming oil is useful in massage blends to relieve stiffness and aching joints. Traditionally used to help promote circulation.
Notes: Slight skin irritant. Use only in low dilutions. - Clary Sage
- Name: Salvia sclarea
Origin: Hungary
The whole flowering plant is distilled. This is the very best oil for depression, post-illness, PMT (cramps, etc), helping relieve anxiety and muscular tension. Its sedative properties mean it is very relaxing so it is best used late in the evening. Dilute and massage the stomach to relieve menstrual pain, or add 2-3 drops to a warm bath.
Notes: Do not use when drinking alcohol or when driving. Avoid during pregnancy and if you have low blood pressure. - Eucalyptus
- Name: Eucalyptus globules
Origin: Portugal
The leaves of the plant are distilled. It's a powerful decongestant. Use in inhalation or dilute and directly massage onto chest when congested due to cold. Especially beneficial when blended with the oils of lavender, pine and thyme. If it is for children or those with sensitive skin, use myrtle essential oil instead as it is less powerful.
Notes: Mild skin irritant - dilute well for use on skin. - Frankincense
- Name: Boswellia carterii
Origin: Somallia
The gum resin from the small tree is distilled. This oil is beneficial for assisting with stress and anxiety. It is good for meditation as it encourages deep, slow breathing. Very valuable in skin care to promote healing and aid tired skin. Gentle astringent properties. - Geranium
- Name: Pelargonium graveolens
The leaves, stalks and flowers are steam distilled. The fresh, herby, powerful aroma can vary according to the environment in which it has grown. The warming and balancing oil is used for acne, cellulite, dull skin, lice, menopause, and oily skin.
Notes: Use caution to avoid dermatitis in hypersensitive persons. Avoid during pregnancy. - Lavender
- Name: Lavandula officinalis
Origin: France
Steam distilled from the flowers. One of the most popular oils due to its versatility, lavender has a fruity, herbal and floral aroma. Relaxing and soothing. Used in burners or baths before a restful sleep or on the skin as an antiseptic.
Notes: Not in early pregnancy. - Lemon
- Name: Citrus limonum
Origin: Spain
The oil is obtained via expression from the peel of the fruit. A tangy and refreshing oil, this is ideal for a bath to stimulate the senses and invigorate the skin. Widely used in natural cosmetics. Helpful for detoxifying. Uplifting and Stimulating.
Notes: Photosensitive - Do not use before exposing the skin to the sun or sun bed. - Marjoram
- Name: Origanum marjorana
Origin: Egypt
The leaves and flowers are distilled. Uses: A warming, comforting oil. Promotes relaxation and encourages deep breathing. Also useful for tired or aching muscles.
Notes: Avoid during pregnancy. - Patchouli
- Name: Pogostemon cablin
Produced by steam distillation of the dried leaves. It has a heavy, rich, earthy fragrance. A soothing and sensual oil. Used in skin care preparations for dry, mature and blemished skin. - Peppermint
- Name: Mentha piperita
Origin: USA
The flowering herb is distilled. Peppermint is a powerful digestive and antiseptic. A wonderfully cooling and invigorating essential oil for the bath. Used as an inhalant to clear catarrh. Excellent for refreshing the atmosphere or creating a studious environment. Good to help with relief of headaches, very cooling. Highly recommended for nausea and indigestion. Fresh minty aroma.
Notes: Mild skin irritant. Avoid during pregnancy. Not recommended for use with small children. - Petitgrain
- Name: Citrus aurantium v. amara
Origin: Paraguay
The leaves and twigs of the bitter orange tree are distilled. This oil is fresh and soothing in the bath. Distilled from the same tree that produces Neroli oil and Bitter Orange oil, petitgrain is one of the ingredients in eau de cologne. Has a toning and calming effect on the skin. This is a very uplifiting oil, great for use in an oil burner when you're feeling blue. - Roman Chamomile
- Name: Anthemis nobilis, Chamaemelum nobilis
Origin: England
The flowering plant is distilled. Its anti-inflammatory mean it is used in skin care to calm and soothe. As it is a gentle oil it is good for use with children. Chamomile contains chemicals in a group known as azulenes, which are believed to block the production of histamine by body cells. Histamine is a chemical released in allergic responses. It causes inflammation and muscle spasms. Evidence from laboratory studies shows that chamomile has antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. - Rosemary
- Name: Rosemarinus officinalis
Origin: Tunisia
The fresh flowering tops are distilled. Rosemary is refreshing, uplifting and very stimulating. Ideal for assisting with mental and physical fatigue, also often used to help ease aching muscles and promote circulation. Use a few drops in a hair rinse to promote healthy hair.
Notes: Avoid during pregnancy and if you have epilepsy. - Sandalwood
- Name: Santalum album
Origin: India
The heartwood of the tree is distilled. This produces an exotic and relaxing perfume or room freshener. Ideal for late evenings as it is long lasting. A few drops in the bath will leave the skin delicately perfumed all evening. Valuable in skin care for dry, chapped skin. Sandalwood has grounding, meditative qualities and is recommended to help you unwind. - Tea Tree
- Name: Melaluca alternifolia
Origin: Australia
The leaves and twigs are distilled. A very popular oil, it is a powerful immuno-stimulant that is highly antiseptic, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral. Extremely beneficial for infections, blemishes, athletes foot and cold sores. Use diluted in a foot bath for athlete's foot. - Ylang Ylang
- Name: Cananga odorata
The flowers are distilled to produce oil that has a sweet, spicy, floral scent. Lovely and relaxing, uplifting and sensual. Useful for all skin types. Used in baths and burners before bedtime.
Notes: Excessive use may lead to headaches and nausea.

- Name: Rose damascene
Distilled from the fresh flowers, this is a absolutely beautiful and luxurious oil. It is excellent for tension, worry and sadness, depression and lack of confidence. It is also very good in skin care for dry, tired and sensitive skins. The balancing effect means it is suitable for all skin types. Often used when suffering from skin irritation or broken capillaries.
Notes: Avoid during pregnancy. - Vanilla
- Name: Vanilla planifolia
Solvent extracted. A beautiful sweet aroma eases stress and puts a smile on your face. Combines beautifully with spice oils, citrus oils and some floral oils.
