Basil
Name: Ocimum basilicum
Origin: Egypt
The flowering herb is steam distilled. It is good for headaches, 'stuffy heads' caused by head colds. Also excellent for memory, mental fatigue and helps relieve muscular aches and pains and is a useful oil to strengthen respiratory system.
Notes: Avoid during pregnancy
Bergamot
Name: Citrus bergamia
Origin: Ivory Coast
The peel of the small citrus fruit is steam distilled. This is a wonderfully uplifting oil. Good for balancing oily or blemished skin. Bergamot is an ideal room freshener with a citrus aroma that makes a lovely addition to potpourri.
Cedarwood
Name: Cedrus atlantica
Origin: Morroco
The wood shavings are distilled. This is a powerful antiseptic. It can be used in an inhalation in cases of coughs and colds. Use as a fixative for natural perfumes. Cedarwood is thought to have a harmonising effect on the senses. It is popular with both men and women because of the woody fragrance.
Notes: Avoid during pregnancy.
Clary Sage
Name: Salvia sclarea
Origin: Hungary
The whole flowering plant is distilled. This is the very best oil for depression, post-illness, PMT (cramps, etc), helping relieve anxiety and muscular tension. Its sedative properties mean it is very relaxing so it is best used late in the evening. Dilute and massage the stomach to relieve menstrual pain, or add 2-3 drops to a warm bath.
Notes: Do not use when drinking alcohol or when driving. Avoid during pregnancy and if you have low blood pressure.
Eucalyptus
Name: Eucalyptus globules
Origin: Portugal
The leaves of the plant are distilled. It's a powerful decongestant. Use in inhalation or dilute and directly massage onto chest when congested due to cold. Especially beneficial when blended with the oils of lavender, pine and thyme. If it is for children or those with sensitive skin, use myrtle essential oil instead as it is less powerful.
Notes: Mild skin irritant - dilute well for use on skin.
Lavender
Name: Lavandula officinalis
Origin: France
Steam distilled from the flowers. One of the most popular oils due to its versatility, lavender has a fruity, herbal and floral aroma. Relaxing and soothing. Used in burners or baths before a restful sleep or on the skin as an antiseptic.
Notes: Not in early pregnancy.
Lemongrass
Name: Cymbopogon flexuosus
Origin: India
The leaves (grass) are distilled to produce a refreshing oil that has a deodorising effect. Good as room freshener. Excellent for footbaths. Stimulating.
Sweet Orange
Name: Citrus sinensis
The oil is obtained from the peel of the fruit via expression. The perfect winter time oil because of its uplifting sweet fragrance. Often used to assist with colds, constipation, dull skin, flatulence, flatulence, flu, gums, mouth, slow digestion and stress.
Ylang Ylang
Name: Cananga odorata
The flowers are distilled to produce oil that has a sweet, spicy, floral scent. Lovely and relaxing, uplifting and sensual. Useful for all skin types. Used in baths and burners before bedtime.
Notes: Excessive use may lead to headaches and nausea.
